It isn’t always easy to start a career as a freelance writer. There are thousands of writers doing the same thing you wish to do. If you follow a few simple guidelines, your success as a writer is definite. One thing that you cannot do is just waiting for work to come to you, you have to find it.

Learning Where to Look

You can always apply here at Vorongo! We accept quality writers from the USA.  If you are interested and think you have what it takes feel free to contact us today.

New writers are often confused as to where to look for work. It never hurts to start on a content mill. While many freelancers look down on content mills, these places almost always have work available. It also helps you get some practice learning structures and new writing techniques.

The feedback from the content mills will also help you to develop as a writer in regards to how to please clients and how to read instructions.

Signing up with Forums

Search for writing forums. This is a good place to start networking. In these forums you will run across other writers, blog owners and project managers. It is highly likely that you will come away from these forums with leads on work and a few connections to ongoing projects to further develop your skills.

Join Social Media Groups

There are a variety of groups for writers and networking on social media such as Facebook. Some groups are closed and require the approval of an administrator. In these groups you will find fellow writers that will help steer you in the right direction. Some may offer you some overflow work. It is important to complete this work on time, ask for a review of your submission and ask if the purchaser would write a testimonial for your portfolio.

This is how you continue to build networking skills and obtain leads on other groups, projects and websites to apply for.

Creating a LinkedIn profile based upon your freelance writing skills is another option for obtaining work and work connections.

Seeking out Private Clients

The search for private clients that will pay you directly is a tough journey. On many of the writing forums you are able to post your availability and what your areas of expertise are. With others seeing this, they can direct some of their overflow clients your way.

Another means of obtaining private clients is to advertise on free online classified services such as Kijiji, Backpage, Angie’s List and Craigslist. Post your Skype ID or email address for contact. When you do secure a private client, always ensure that your payments are up front and offer to do a few revisions if you happened to miss the mark a little bit.

The more determined you are to be successful, the more likely it is to happen. You have to create a positive reputation for yourself in the writing world and maintain it. Meet deadlines, post reviews, and of course, have a portfolio available. Start small with one project or a few private clients on a small volume. You can work your way up to taking volumes over time. Quality is always more important than quantity.
