It may seem like a simple task, but finding the right keywords for your industry and choosing the ones with high research volumes is easier said than done. This is because keyword research requires a much more involved approach than you would initially think. Unfortunately, many users do not realize this and so end up making grave errors in their SEO practices. Here are five keyword research mistakes that you should avoid at all costs.
1. Not Performing Adequate Keyword Research
If you do not perform thorough keyword research, your marketing efforts make go down the drain. One of the most common mistakes for novice web users is not implementing enough of their efforts towards keyword research. If you do not have the right tools and knowledge, it is extremely easy for data to be misinterpreted. Know that finding keywords with the highest volume is not adequate, as you must look more towards buyer keywords than anything else. This is because you do not just want traffic, you want the right kind of traffic; the kind that will increase your turnover rate.
2. Not Geo-targeting Your Audience
This mistake may seem obvious, but it is actually extremely common. Search data varies vastly by location. For instance, if you are attempting to target California, then ensure that the keyword research tools you are using have their Geo-targeting settings set to California. If you are targeting more than one location, then ensure that you add both areas to the Geo-targeting settings. Keyword Planner is an excellent tool to use to implement Geo-targeting, as it will do all the hard work for you. Just make sure that you input the right settings.
3. Quality is Better Than Quantity
You could link to hundreds of websites that have low to no authority and not receive the same impact as you would with linking to a single strongly reputable website. The truth is if you linked to one website with low authority, it can drastically lower your ranking and make all your hard work worth nothing. Always keep in mind that it is not the number of links you use, but the quality of those links. Links to sites that aid in strengthening your trust and authority signals will boost your website ranking.
4. Putting Too Much Focus on Individual Keywords
Although search volume is a crucial component, and so ignoring low-volume keywords is often the right move, there are times when you should not dismiss lower volume keywords if they are topic specific. As a whole, the small keyword volume words can make a tangible impact. By finding these low impact keywords and using them throughout your website, it can add thousands of additional extremely relevant searches to your website every month. On top of this, Google will better understand the subject of your site if you include secondary keywords related to your primary topic.
5. Not Optimizing Your Permalinks
Another critical mistake of keyword research is not understanding that every component of your blog post or article is an opportunity to optimize. This includes permalinks of posts and web pages. Ensure that your permalinks are short and sweet, and look pleasing to the eye. Make sure that they help users know the topics of your articles, and avoid using special characters and parameters. Using long permalinks tends to get them chopped, which loses their ability to describe their content adequately. This is why you should keep your permalinks to 30 or fewer characters.
